Jhinjhoti

Programme note

In the late evening, Raag Jhinjhoti is one of many Indian instrumentalist’s favourite raags. It is very soft and sweet, but with a playful character. This orchestral Jhinjhoti is a fairly traditional presentation of the raag, which is a first in my oeuvre: other raga-based pieces were mostly multiple raags combined or free-form. The traditional form uses a melody which becomes a catchphrase for further explorations in the raag. This allows for lots of fun melodic and rhythmic games, which seemed very 􀀣tting for the Ricciotti Ensemble, which commissioned and premiered the piece.
